An Overview of ICSI & IVF Treatments
When trying
to conceive, infertility issues are not always something that couples consider.
However, about 10 to 15% of couples in Pakistan face infertility issues.
Among these problems are the product of poor quality eggs by females and
sperm abnormalities in males.
ICSI & IVF Procedures can be used for couples facing these problems to increase their
chances of pregnancy. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI is often
considered the most fundamental breakthrough in the field of reproductive
medicine.
There are no
defined criteria in the field of medicine to determine which cases should
receive IVF & ICSI procedures and which should not. It depends on the
doctor or infertility specialist and the fertility clinic used.
Some
fertility clinics use ICSI procedures for cases that involve only serious male infertility problems, while others use it for a wider range of infertility
problems. Although ICSI procedures have a solid success rate, success can
depend on a number of factors. This will depend on the severity of the
infertility problem, but may also depend on the technique used and the skill of
the person performing the procedure.
Although
fertility clinics vary, some recommend IVF & ICSI Procedures for
specific situations. In some situations, couples face severe male infertility
and do not seek to use a sperm donor and couples who have used in vitro
fertilization and who have had no chance of fertilization or a low percentage
of their mature eggs have been fertilized. It is also used when couples have
had IVF in the past and have produced very few eggs during the recovery
process.
When ICSI is
used in this case, it is to try to produce a larger quantity of eggs that will
be fertilized. The success rate of IVF in vitro fertilization methods
that include Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has been shown in several studies
to be higher than that of IVF alone. The normal reason for this is that most of
the time the women involved were young and considered fertile.
Low quality
or low volume egg production is another reason why ICSI & IVF procedures
can be used. The success rate for this particular infertility problem is normally
lower. The main determining factor for IVF procedures is the viability and
quality of the embryos transferred.
The viability
and the quality of these embryos depends on the quality of the eggs produced.
Whether the issue of infertility is the production of quality eggs or the
quality of sperm, IVF and ICSI techniques can increase the chances that a couple can conceive, in most cases.
